Under the auspices of the Department of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs of Dakshina Kannada district and the D. K. District Federation of Consumer Organizations(R), ‘World Consumer Day celebrations and award of Certificates on Consumer Education’ was organized in D.K. Zilla Panchayat auditorium on 15-03-2014. The Deputy Commissioner of the district Mr. A. B. Ibrahim was the inaugurator of this programme. In his inaugural speech he said that the people of D. K. district are known for their intelligence. However, the consumers of this region are exploited by the businessmen due to various reasons like non availability of market information, ignorance of consumer rights, lack of communication skills, etc. Therefore, there is a need to create awareness among consumers about their rights and duties. He also urged the citizens to take part very effectively in the administrative mechanism of the government at various levels.
On this special occasion, the chief guest Dr. N. K. Thingalaya, the chairman of Academic Council, Nitte K. S. Hegde Educational Institutions and the former chairman of Syndicate Bank honoured various student consumer clubs of the district which have performed well during this academic year. He also distributed the certificates to the students who have successfully completed the certificate course on Consumer Education. Suraksha Consumer Forum was adjudged as the Best Consumer Club and Mr. Dinakara Rao was recognized as the Best Coordinating Director in college section during this academic year. Ms. Lavitha D’Souza of I B.Com ‘B’ Section was honoured with silver medal for her outstanding performance in certificate course on consumer education. The project work report prepared by Ms. Lavitha D’Souza and group of I B.Com ‘B’ Section on the topic ‘Gold Issues’ has won the ‘Best Project Work Award’ of this year. Suraksha Consumer Forum was also felicitated for the 100 percent result in certificate course on Consumer Education. Mr. K. C. Prabhu, the President, Lions Club International, District 317D was the guest of honour of this programme. Mr. M. J. Salian, the President, D. K. District Federation of Consumer Organizations(R) presided over the function. Dr. Shridhara Maniyani, the Principal, Govt. First Grade College Kavoor and Mr. Sharana Basappa, Deputy Director, Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs were present on this occasion.
Prof. Leo Noronha, the Principal of the College, Mr. Dinakara Rao, Director of Suraksha Consumer Forum and 58 students of Suraksha Consumer Forum have participated in this programme.
