In view of creating awareness about the effects of smoking and consumption of tobacco among college students, Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research, St Philomena College, Puttur had organized workshop on ‘Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Prohibition Act’ (COTPA-2003) on 13.08.2015 in collaboration with Karnataka State Police, D.K Police, Puttur Police Subdivision.
The event was chaired by Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairperson of P.G Studies St. Philomena College. Dr John Kenedy, Nodal Officer, COTPA-2013 was the Resource Person. Mr. Bhaskar Rai, DYSP, Puttur Sub-division, Mr. Abdul Khadhar Sub Inspector, Puttur City Police Station and Mr. Nagaraj Sub Inspector Puttur Traffic Police Station were the chief guests on the occasion.
Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairperson of P.G Studies in his presidential remarks said that organizing this kind of workshops are very useful and meaningful for students to make them aware about the harmful effects of smoking and consumption of tobacco and opined that increased such habits are spoiling the energy of youth and hamper the development of the nation.
Dr. John Kenedy , Nodal officer, COTPA-2013 while delivering a resource talk explained the consequences of consuming tobacco products on health and environment, punishment for the offences like smoking in public areas, advertising tobacco products and so on and the role of private and public organizations and educational institution in educating public and students in this regard. Later Resource person interacted with the students about Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Prohibition act in detail.
The chief guests Mr. Bhaskar Rai, DYSP, Puttur Sub-division, Mr. Abdul Khadhar Sub Inspector, Puttur City Police Station and Mr. Nagaraj Sub Inspector Puttur Traffic Police Station congratulated the organizers and wished for the success of the workshop and implementation of the law in its strict sense.
The workshop started at 3.30 pm with the opening prayer by Varsha Molyar and team of M. Sc Physics, followed by the welcome address by Ms. Krithi, Assistant Professor, P.G Department of Social Work and Mr. Nagaraj of Puttur Police station proposed vote of thanks. Ms. Srimani Assistant Professor, P.G Department of Social Work emceed the programme.
