Women Empowerment Cell Inaugurated

Women EmpowermwntWomen Empowerment Cell, 2014-2015 of St. Philomena College was inaugurated on 9th July, 2014 at Silver Jubilee Memorial Hall, St. Philomena College, Puttur.

On the same occasion a talk on Health and Hygiene for the girl students was also arranged.

The Chief Guest and the resource person of the session was Dr. Sulekha Varadharaj, Paediatrician. Prof.Leo Norohna , Principal,St. Philomena College presided over the function. Prof. Venkateshwari, convenor, Women Empowerment Cell , the co-convenors Ms. Suma, Lecturer, Department of English and Ms. Harshitha, Lecturer, Department of Commerce and the of Ms. Radhika were also present for the programme.

The programme was inaugurated by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.

Prof. Leo Norohna while addressing the gathering said, “Men and women are born equal, they are complementary to each other. For the progress of the society the contribution of both men and women is equally important.” Stressing on the importance of the women in the society, he quoted Jawaharlal Nehru, “Inorder to wake the people women should be awake. When a woman moves along with her the family and the nation also moves.’ This speaks volumes about the importance of the women. They make a large difference in the society as a daughter, sister, wife and a mother.”

Boosting the confidence of the ladies present there, the Principal further said, “Women should never be considered weak as they have proved themselves in every walk of life.”

Dr. Sulekha Varadharaj in her inaugural address said, “ The society claims that the women has to be empowered as they are considered to be the weaker section but the fact of the matter is that both men and women are equal, the only difference is in the biological factor. It is biologically proved that the women are stronger. In the case of the child with lower birth weight the survival rate in the female child is more compared to the male child.

She added, “As the women are stronger and they can do multitasking the nature has more faith in them and has given the responsibility of the motherhood.”

Dr. Sulekha Varadharaj conducted an informative session on ‘Health and Hygiene’. She touched on the various essential topics like the importance of life. She stressed that along with the physical fitness it is the mental, emotional, social, spiritual well being also contributed towards having the healthy life. She also spoke on personal and environmental hygiene and guided the students to lead a clean and a healthy life.
