Department of Zoology, Rovers and Rangers of St. Philomena College in association with Karnataka Forest Department, Puttur Division organised the festival of planting saplings, Vanamahotsava on 31st July, 2014 at Silver Jubilee Memorial Hall, St.Philomena College, Puttur.
The Resource Person Mr. Shreedhar P, Range Forest Officer, Puttur Division while addressing the gathering said, “The forest wealth in our country is extremely diverse as a result of huge variation in the topography of the country. Therefore it is required to plant different species of plant to maintain the biodiversity.”
He added, “If one tree is cut we should cultivate a habit of planting ten trees so as to maintain the ecological balance.”
Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Campus Director in his inaugural address said, “There was a huge forest cover earlier but it is depleting everyday which has resulted in global warming. It is the duty of every individual to take initiative to increase the green cover.”
Prof. Leo Norohna, Principal, St. Philomena College presided over the function. Mr. Krishnappa, Deputy Range Forest Officer, Mr. Khalander Shareef, Director of Rangers was also present.
The Forest Department gave 150 sapplings to be planted in the college. The programme has brought awareness among the students who will in turn take keen interest in preserving the trees.
Ms. Krithika and Ms. Keerthi sang the prayer song. Mrs. Meenakshi, H. O. D of Zoology and Director of Rangers welcomed the gathering. Ms. Fayal proposed the Vote of Thanks.
