The Journalism course of St. Philomena College was inaugurated on 26th July, 2014 at Silver Jubilee Memorial Hall, St. Philomena College, Puttur.
Very Rev. Fr Alfred Pinto, Correspondent, St. Philomena College presided over the function. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. V. B Arthikaje, Freelance Journalist, the Guest of Honour was Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Campus Director and Chairman of P. G Studies, Prof.Leo Norohna, Principal of the College, Mr. Basthyam Pais,the Director of Literary Association, Mr. Jayakumar Rai, the President of Alumni Association, Ms.Anjali Rai, Lecturer , Department of Journalism were also present.
Prof. V. B Arthikaje while addressing the gathering said, “To be a good journalist one should be ever ready, committed and matured. A Journalist should have innovative ideas and reach out to public effectively. For any report to be effective it should be short enough but should cover the total content of the matter.”
Very Rev. Fr Alfred Pinto in his presidential address said, “The advantage of mass media is that it reaches a large number of people at the same time simultaneously. A journalist should be able to understand the sentiment of the people and most importantly should never lose his ethics.”
On the same occasion a workshop on Journalism was organized by the Department of Journalism in association with Literary Association and Alumni Association.
The workshop was divided into two sessions. The first session was opened by a thought provoking lecture by Prof. V. B Arthikaje about the basics of journalism and the qualities required by a journalist. The second session Prof. Bhaskar Hegde, HOD of Journalism, SDM College, Ujire was very insightful. He informed the students about the worth of Journalism and also introduced them to wide opportunities in this field. This workshop was organized with an aim to professionally groom the budding journalists.
The programme was welcomed by Mr. Jayakumar Rai, the President of Alumni Association. The prayer song was sung by Ms. Nisha and Ms. Varsha of l B.A. The programme was compered by Mr. Kalander Shareef, Lecturer, Department of Computer Science.
