MSW Camp

The Post Graduate Department of Social Work organized 6 days Educational Rural Camp for I MSW students at Padumale, Badagannur Grama Panchayat, Puttur Tq from 03-01-2014 to 08-01-2014.

Rural Camp is an opportunity for the Social Work students to have a better experience of community life & improve their professional skills by organizing need based programmes & awareness campaigns with the support and collaboration of local people. It also provides ample opportunity for students to learn the importance of adjustment & coordination in life.

This camp took its structure with the help of local leaders & various organizations through series of discussions and interactions with key persons and community people as well.

The inaugural function was held on 3rd January, 2014, 5.30 p.m. at Govt. Primary School, Padumale. Shri Mohammad badaganoor, member, Taluk Panchayat, Puttur inaugurated the Camp by lighting the lamp & expressed his best wishes for the success of the camp. Very Rev Fr, Gerald D’souza, Correspondent of St. Philomena College, presided over the function.  Prof. Leo Noronha,  Principal St. Philomena College; Mrs. Savitha, President of Badagannooru Gram Panchayat; Mr. Shashidar G. S. B.E.O, Puttur;, Mr. Hemanath Shetty Kavu, Former president of Temple governing council, Kavu; Mr. Raviraj Rai, member of Grama Panchayat, Badagannuru, Subrahmanya Bhat Pattaje, well wisher,  put into words of their good wishes.

The valedictory function was held on 7th January at 5.30 p.m. Rev, Dr. Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairperson of Post Graduate Studies St. Philomena College Puttur presided over the function. Shri Achutha Moodethaya, President of Temple governing council, Mahalingeshwara temple, Puttur; Shri subha Rai Kadamajalu, President, Karnataka Vijnana Parishad; were few among chief guests. The guests of the valedictory session applauded and wished the students as well as all the organizers for the successful and unique venture. Local people and MSW students shared their experience of camp with the audience.

During the camp hands-on training about soap, phenyl, soapy water making was organized as a part of self employment training session for local self help groups. The programmes on moral values, life skills, handicraft training, capacity building activities for students at different schools were conducted with the help of concerned schools.  Apart from these street plays, Blood donation and Medical camps were also been organized successfully in collaboration with various community based organizations.

On 4rd January:

under the guidance of Mr. Mounesh Vishwakarma, a well known theatre Artist & Journalist, a one-day session was held for the children of surrounding schools on ‘Capacity Building’ at Padumale School.

On the same day Mr. Preetham B.H. II MSW student of the college conducted training programme for school children on craft works at higher primary school Koila Badagannoor.

On the same day evening at 4.30 p.m. astreet play – ‘Devvada Jaala’ was performed by MSW students at Eshwaramangala Junction which reached the onlookers effectively. The theme for the play was globalization and its effect on rural youth and peasants. Nearly 500 viewers witnessed the show. The same play was also performed on stage during the cultural evening of the day.

On 5th January:

‘A Voluntary Blood Grouping and Blood Donation Camp’

was held in collaboration with Wenlock  hospital blood bank, Mangalore and Rotary – Campco  Blood Bank Puttur, along with Local Organizations at Higher primary school, Padumale. Campers and local youth donated blood on the occasion.

During the afternoon session Shri K.C. Patali, retired teacher and a researcher gave a informative talk on the history of the place – Padumale. This was held at Grama Panchayat hall, Badagannooru.

Another component of this camp was ‘Free General Health Checkup and Treatment Camp’. This was held in collaboration with KMC Hospital, Attavar Mangalore along with Local Organizations at Higher primary school, Padumale. This successful event was held on 6-01-2014 and local people were the beneficiaries of this venture. 120 people turned up to utilize this rare opportunity.

On the Same day, an informative talk on “Moral values” was conducted at Balasubramanya higher Primary School Sulliapadavu. The resource person of this session was Mrs. Geetha, teacher Irde-Uppalige school.

At the same time, another session on handicraft training progarmme was conducted by  Mr. Preetham B.H. second year MSW student, St.Philomena College, Puttur. This programme was for school children of higher Primary school Sajankady.

The afternoon session was conducted by Mr. Krishna, Lecturer P. G. Dept of social Work St. Philomena college Puttur on “Life skills” at Prathibha high school Patte for school children.

on 7th of January:

hands-on training about soap, phenyl, soapy water making was organized as a part of self employment training session for local self help groups at Panchayat Hall, Badagannuru. The trainer for this activity was Ms. Aruna resource person, Jana Shikshana Trust, Mangalore.

At the same time, another session on handicraft training progarmme was conducted by  Mr. Preetham B.H. second year MSW student, St.Philomena College, Puttur. This programme was for school children of higher Primary School Padumale.

Every morning the day of the campers began at 5.30 a.m., followed by prayer, exercise & shramadan & ended around 11.00 p.m. with an evaluation hour.

The cooperation & support of local authorities, organizations & people at large was noteworthy & inspiring. The students had good opportunity to observe, learn & showcase their abilities as a professional social worker with sensitivity towards community needs.
