The inauguration of the P.G courses in Economics and Computer Science and felicitation to the Honourable Minister for Railway’s and the Alumnus of the college Mr. D.V Sadananda Gowda took place on 16th August 2014 at Silver Jubilee Memorial hall of St. Philomen College Puttur.
Inorder to stress the importance of P.G courses particularly for the students from the rural areas the college has already started courses in commerce, social work, physics and Mathematics. This is extended by starting two more new courses in Economics and Computer Science.
Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Campus Director and Chairman of P.G studies in his preliminary remarks said, “The results of the P.G courses which we had already started gave good results which encouraged us to start few more Post graduate Courses. He added, “The very purpose of an institution is to mould the students and prepare them for greater challenges. To witness this we have a number of students who have passed out and are doing great in their respective fields, one among them is the Honourable Minister for Railway’s Mr. D.V Sadananda Gowda. “
Prof. Sripathi Kalluraya, Chairperson, Dept of Economics, Mangalore University said, “Computer Science is the need of the hour for the younger generations and economics is forever.” He congratulated the management for taking the initiative of starting these courses. He said, “According to the development theory the availability of resources and utilizing the available resources is important for the development.” He advised the students that based on their learning one should be innovative in their approach and look out for a new type of development.
On the same occasion Mr. D.V Sadananda Gowda , Honourable Minister for Railway’s who is an alumnus of St. Philomena College was felicitated for his achievement in the field of politics. Most Rev. Dr Aloysius P. D’Souza , Bishop of Mangalore felicitated him and Mr. Pasanna Kumar, lecturer, Department of Social Work read the citation address.
Responding to the felicitation Mr. D.V Sadananda Gowda , Honourable Minister for Railway’s being the alumnus of this institution he proudly said that the foundation of his journey could be traced back to this college and owes his so much to this institution which he will cherish throughout his life.
He further said, “It is the college which has the responsibility of shaping the students in the right direction and make them capable enough to reach the level of excellence.” He listed out the four components which makes education effective, it being ‘learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, learning to be’. Imbibing these four components in education will make it more powerful and influential.
He motivated the students by saying that, “Instead of going in search of jobs you as students of this great institution should make a difference by creating jobs for many.” He concluded by advising the students to work with sincerity and honesty.
Inorder to mark this day the Annual Magazine was released by the Honourable Minister.
Most Rev. Dr Aloysius P. D’Souza in his presidential address said, “St. Philomena College has being imparting education with character building blessed our honorable minister to perform to the best of its ability so as to serve the country.”
The gathering was welcomed by Very Rev. Fr Alfred J.Pinto, Correspondent, St.Philomena College. Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof.leo Norohna, Principal of the College. The master of the Ceremony was Mrs. Anila, Lecturer, Department of Social Work, P.G.
Very Rev. Fr. Gerald D’Souza, Secretary of the CBE, Mr. Naleen Kumar Kateel,Member of Parliament of Dakshina Kannada District and Rev. Fr Vijay Lobo, Principal of P.U college also graced the occasion.
