St Philomena College organized the Annual Athletic Meet 2014-15 on 15th December, 2014 at the college ground.
The Chief Guest of the inaugural function Mr. Jagadish Shetty Nellikatte, President, Town Municipality, Puttur , the President of the function, Prof. Leo Noronha, Principal of St. Philomena College, the Guests of Honour, Former National Kabaddi player & Almnus of the college, Mr. Madhava B.K., Asst. Youth Service & Sports Officer, Puttur, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro , Campus Director and Chairman of P.G studies and Rev. Fr Vijay Lobo, Principal, St. Philomena PU College received the guard of honour from the students as they marched towards the salute base. In the fore front of the eye catching March Past was Mr. Sanjay, lll B.Sc, state level Hockey player, the proud students of the college who have represented our college in different sports at different levels followed him with the Institutional Flag. This was followed by all the classes of B. A, B.Com, B.B.M, B.Sc, B.C.A, B.S.W each led by the flag bearers and placard holders. The college band attracted everybody’s attention with their great performance.
After the inspection of the team by the guests the Chief Guest declared the meet open by releasing a bunch of balloon with the hope that as the ballons rises the performance of the athlete will also rise. The college flag was unfurled by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Madhava B.K. The most glittering part of the day was when the torch was carried from the chapel to the Silver Jubilee Hall by Mr. Aditya, lll BBM, the captain of the college cricket team. He was accompanied by the other illustrious sportspersons of the college
The Chief Guest of the function said, “St. Philomena College has a glorious history. The college has given the country many illustrious sportspersons.” He further said, “Along with keeping our surrounding clean we should also focus on inner cleanliness i.e. by being a good human being and working for the progress of the country.”
The Guest of Honour Mr. Madhava B.K said, “The sports day is an important day for the entire athletes. The ground is the place where the future of the student and the country is shaped. Any form of sports will help in the overall development of an individual.” He concluded by saying that discipline is the biggest mantra for success.
All the flag barriers marched towards the flag pole to take the oath ‘to participate with true spirit in the honour of the institution and the glory of our country.’
Prof. Leo Noronha in his Presidential address said, “Sports day is an occasion when all of us come together in a spirit of solidarity, sportsman spirit and feeling of proud. Sports motivate, inspire, and even heal, therefore let us all join together to celebrate this day.”
In the March Past lB.Com B won the first prize for the March Past. The second prize was won by l B.Sc and third prize was won by Il BSW and l B.A respectively.
Prof. Vishnu Bhat, Vice Principal of the college, Prof. Sheshappa Gowda, Physical Director, Govt. First grade College, Puttur, Mr. Ashraff, Physical Education Teacher of Mountain View High School Salmara, Fr. Rithesh Rodrigues, Warden of Men’s Hostel, Sr. Rosy Saldhana, Warden of Women’s Hostel were also present. Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro , Campus Director and Chairman of P.G Studies and Research Centre welcomed the gathering. The Physical Director Mr. Prakash D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks. Prof. Ganapathy, HOD of Economics was the Master of Ceremony.
The annual sports meet was in full action under the leadership of the Physical Directors, Mr. Prakash D’Souza and Ms. Sowmyalatha K. There were races, throws, jumps and various other items. There were few sports events organized for the staff of the college. The winners were awarded for their performances. The team Champions of the tournament were ll B.Com ‘A’, first runners up were ll B.com ‘B’ and the second runners up were ll B.A. Mr. Sharon Muthanna was the Individial Champion- Male and Ms. Akkamma K.K. was the Individual Champion- female.
The Annual sports meet was an opportunity for the students to learn sportsmanship, spirit of competition, team spirit, co-operation and discipline in the field.
The last part of the tournament was the flag bearers lowering the flag and handing it over to the Sports Secretary, Mr. Praveen D.S marking the closure of the tournament.
