Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha

Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha was born on April 27, 1964 at Kirem near Kinnigoly. He had his formal education in his village. Since his young days he nursed great desire to serve the Kingdom of God for which he was enrolled in St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore. On completion of the mandatory education and training he was ordained priest on May 6, 1991. Observing the irresistible urge in him to know more about Philosophy and Theology, the then Bishop sent him to Rome and from the Pontifical Urban University he obtained his Doctorate in 2005.

Upon his return from Rome, he was appointed Professor at St Joseph’s Seminary, Jeppu, Mangalore. The Pontifical Urban University beckoned him again, keen as it was to benefit from his expertise. He served there as Professor in 2010. From 2011-2015, he was the spiritual Father at the Pontificio Collegio  Urbano De Propaganda Fide, Rome. On 14-03-2015 the Holy Father appointed him as Consulter of the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, and in July 2015 he was appointed as Adiutor Secretarii Specialis (Helper to the Special Secretary) of the XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops which dealt on the topic of family. Bishop P.P Saldanha is fluent in several native languages, English, Italian and easily reads French. He was ordained Bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore on Sept 15, 2018.

Bishop P.P Saldanha rates simplicity very high and lives by it. Lending his good ears to the views of others is his trait. Participatory leadership figures prominently in his style of functioning. He is committed to fostering harmony among the religious communities. A concerned environmentalist that he is, Bishop P.P Saldanha has been in the fore-front of the Green Movement. An avid follower of the teachings of Pope Francis, Bishop P.P Saldanha has greatly been inspired by the Pope.
